“Detectives have determined this was a targeted event,” police said in a Thursday news release.

Autopsies have yet to be scheduled.

At 2 p.m., more than a dozen police vehicles had closed 52 Street and taped off a sprawling commercial complex centred around a Petro-Canada gas station. Investigators had covered a body on the pavement next to a Chevrolet car with its doors open. An ambulance sat nearby.

To the south, a group of nearly 20 people had gathered outside a nearby Popeyes restaurant. Some wept and held one another as police spoke to others in the group. One woman was led away in tears after collapsing to the ground. The police helicopter flew by overhead.

Later Thursday, police were notified of a vehicle fire in the area of 34 Street and Township Road 510 north of Beaumont. Police continue to investigate if this vehicle is linked to the shooting. No one was located inside the vehicle and no injuries were reported as a result of the fire Thursday evening.

Candice Marshall, a nearby resident, was picking up a parcel a short time after police taped off the initial scene. She said she was shocked when she saw feet sticking out from under two tarps.

“I saw the ambulance and then I saw the feet under white blankets.”

Marshall said a woman arrived at the scene a short time later and wailed, “My son, my son.”

“She dropped to the ground,” Marshall said.

She heard another woman say, “Daddy, daddy, not my daddy.”

In an email soon after officers had converged on the scene, city police said they received reports of a drone flying over the site and asked the owner to immediately remove it from the area.

“This is a very active scene and the drone will be seized by the Edmonton Police Service if it is not removed,” police said.

Police said the details of the shooting were immediately posted to and discussed on social media and detectives are hoping to speak with any witnesses or individuals who may have specific information about the event.
